    Competent Supervisor Training

    Course Overview

    Competent Supervisor Training prepares participants to meet the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and applicable Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) regulations.

    Under the OHSA, employers are required to ensure that supervisors are competent—meaning they have the knowledge, training, and experience to organize work safely, understand legal responsibilities, and recognize and control workplace hazards.
    This course provides supervisors with the practical and legal foundation needed to fulfill that role effectively.


    Duration:

    • 8 hours total, typically delivered as:
          • 4 hours – Health and Safety Law
          • 4 hours – Competent Supervisor Responsibilities

    Delivery Options:

    Competent Supervisor Training can be delivered:

    • Onsite for employers

    Training Method

    Instruction includes:

    • Instructor-led discussion
    • Practical examples and workplace scenarios
    • Applied learning tied to supervisory responsibilities

    The course emphasizes real-world application, not just regulatory awareness.

    Course Content

    Health and Safety Law (4 Hours)

    Participants develop a clear understanding of legal obligations and accountability, including:

    • Due diligence and what it means for supervisors and organizations
    • Occupational health and safety legislation and regulations
    • Roles and responsibilities under the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and JHSC
    • Common offences and corresponding penalties
    • What is required to demonstrate due diligence, including:
      • Policies
      • Programs
      • Documentation
      • Training

    Competent Supervisor Responsibilities (4 Hours)

    This portion of the course focuses on applying legal knowledge in day-to-day operations, including:

    • Hazard identification, controls, and inspections
      • Incident and accident investigations
      • Critical injuries and legal definitions
      • Core components of an effective health and safety program
      • Evaluating the effectiveness of an existing H&S program
      • Job hazard identification and analysis
