Functional and Cognitive Assessments
Functional and cognitive assessments evaluate an individual’s ability to safely perform the essential duties of a role. They are commonly used for safety-sensitive, physically demanding, or high-risk positions to support placement, return-to-work, and workforce risk management decisions.

Assessment Components
Evaluations are tailored to the functional and cognitive demands of the role and may include:
- Functional capacity testing (strength, mobility, endurance, coordination)
- Task-based assessments aligned to job requirements
- Evaluation of tolerance for sustained, repetitive, or awkward postures
- Balance, coordination, attention, and reaction time (where relevant)
- Review of functional limitations or restrictions
- Fitness-for-duty recommendations, including restrictions or accommodations
Assessments are designed to evaluate work capability, not to diagnose medical or psychological conditions.

The value of functional and cognitive assessments depends on how closely they reflect real job demands. WMC works with employers to ensure assessments are proportionate, role-specific, and applied consistently to support repeatable, defensible outcomes.
