Course Overview
Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) Training prepares participants to safely and effectively operate self-propelled elevated work platforms in accordance with applicable occupational health and safety legislation and standards.
The course focuses on operator responsibilities, hazard recognition, equipment inspection, and safe operating practices to reduce risk and support accident-free operation. Participants develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to operate MEWPs competently in real workplace environments.
Duration:

Course Content
Participants receive instruction covering both regulatory requirements and safe operating practices, including:
- Applicable sections of occupational health and safety legislation, CSA standards, and regulations
- Worker and supervisor rights and responsibilities
- Competency requirements and associated penalties
- Review of fall protection principles and equipment
- Equipment inspection and work area assessment requirements
- Identification of site-specific hazards
- Controls for safe operation of MEWPs
- Safety decals, load capacities, and equipment limitations
- Key factors for the safe operation of mobile elevating work platforms
Practical Evaluation
Each participant completes a hands-on practical evaluation, which includes:
- Inspection of the mobile elevating work platform
- Inspection and correct use of fall protection equipment
- Safe driving, positioning, and elevation of the platform
- Operator skills evaluation
Practical evaluations: Duration varies based on lift type and the participant’s experience level. Evaluations typically take between 10 and 30 minutes per person. New operators may require additional time.[KV23.1] For more information on evaluation time, please contact Workplace Medical.
Prerequisites
- Participants must have completed fall protection or Working at Heights training prior to practical evaluation
- New operators are strongly encouraged to complete a minimum of 8 hours of documented, supervised practical experience before attending the course to support successful evaluation outcomes
