The biggest reason avoidable absences occur is because company policy, stated and unstated, allow it.
Preventing avoidable absences means ensuring the employee is fit for the job when they are hired or when they return to work from an accident or illness and making sure that exposures in the work environement are not setting the seeds for future medical absences.
Many avoidable absences occur because of "leaks" in the system. That is, policies that are not enforced, monitored or applied consistently.
